Vladimir Petkovic, 62, has been relieved of his duties as head coach of Algeria’s national football team, despite having signed a contract extension that was to keep him until 2028 before the World Cup.
Petkovic took charge of the Algerian national team in February 2024, successfully qualifying them for the World Cup. The team progressed from the group stage but was eliminated in the Round of 16 following a 0-2 defeat to Switzerland, the team he had coached for seven years.
Last night, the Algerian football authorities announced his departure, a surprising move given that they had convinced him to extend his contract just before the World Cup.
Algerian Football Federation Announces Coaching Change
The Algerian Football Federation has officially announced the termination of its contractual relationship with coach Vladimir Petkovic and his technical staff, effective immediately.
In a statement, the Federation expressed its gratitude towards Petkovic and his staff for their professionalism, dedication, and commitment over the 29 months they managed the national team.
Petkovic’s tenure saw him lead Algeria to 23 wins, 5 draws, and 5 losses across 33 matches. At the World Cup, Algeria finished third in Group J with results including a 0-3 loss to Argentina, a 2-1 victory over Jordan, and a 3-3 draw with Austria before their elimination by Switzerland.
