The Lithuanian Prime Minister has proposed that the Ministry of Education, Science, and Sport review the general secondary education programs established in 2022. The new approach suggests ceasing the teaching of patriotism and citizenship using texts from Mikhail Lomonosov, a writer associated with Russian imperial wars.
As reported by LRT, Lomonosov is currently included in the curriculum for the Russian language and literature classes for students of the Russian national minority, where teachers can select him as a part of the topic on “Classicism and the Age of Enlightenment.”
In contrast, Prime Minister Sinkevičius has recommended incorporating the works of Taras Shevchenko into the school programs. He believes this would help the youth of Lithuania better understand Ukrainian national identity and the texts that shaped it.
The Ministry of Education, Science, and Sport stated that they would consider the Prime Minister’s proposal within the next two weeks and aim to make a decision regarding potential changes by the end of August, prior to the start of the new school year.
