Daniel Oprița, 44, recently signed a new contract with Steaua but is now reevaluating his position as head coach due to the team’s struggles in the second league and backlash from fans following a defeat to Slatina.
Steaua’s performance has created a tense atmosphere, as supporters protested during the first half of the match against Slatina. They expressed their discontent with the management and the Ministry of National Defense for failing to resolve promotion rights issues for nearly ten years. Oprița himself faced insults from the crowd, leading to a heated response after the match.
Oprița Voices Concerns Over Support
“I haven’t received any strong offers elsewhere, just some that I didn’t find appealing. I’ve stayed here until it becomes clear what will happen next. Given the current situation and the reactions from fans, perhaps they no longer want me here,” Oprița stated after the match.
He also mentioned club-imposed restrictions and the last-minute registration of some players, which contributed to a challenging week for the team.
“It has been a difficult week, and we faced uncertainty about whether we would play with the new transfers. Some players didn’t meet expectations. This is Steaua: the fans, the name, the stadium. The pitch conditions are terrible! I don’t believe anyone sabotaged FCSB; we are in the same position,” he added.
Potential Conflict with Supporters
When asked if this week would be crucial for his future at Steaua, Oprița replied, “We’ll see what happens. There have been discussions with the fans lately. I’m trying to resolve the issues we have. I don’t want to discuss this too much now; it’s clear I’m not in a good place after this defeat, especially with additional problems arising.”
He urged supporters to communicate their feelings directly instead of resorting to insults, expressing disappointment that after so many years at the club, he does not wish to engage in conflict.
Moreover, Alexandru Albu faced criticism for wearing the number 23, which references the founding year of rival club Rapid. Oprița announced plans to change Albu’s jersey number following the incident.
“We’re discussing changing Albu’s number. Given everything that’s happened, I didn’t even realize the significance of the number. It’s unfortunate, but the fans should be pleased that I wasn’t aware of that context,” Oprița remarked.
