Adrian Bumbescu, a former central defender of Steaua and European Cup winner, has openly criticized Dorinel Munteanu in a recent interview. Bumbescu expressed his frustrations about the ongoing issues facing Steaua, particularly their inability to secure promotion to the Superliga this year.
The start of the new Liga 2 season has been rocky for Steaua, as the team suffered a 1-2 home defeat against CSM Slatina. Following the match, Bumbescu discussed the various challenges that head coach Daniel Oprița is facing.

“There’s always been issues at the start of the season, and this year has been no different. Oprița is dealing with numerous challenges after many players have left, impacting the team’s cohesion. Each year, he has had to bring in seven to nine new players. While we do have talented individuals, the ongoing problems are taking their toll,” Bumbescu stated.
He further noted that while fans remain supportive, their frustrations are directed towards unnamed issues rather than the team itself. “The supporters are not against the team; rather, they are frustrated by something else, which I cannot delve into. They do come out to support us, and we need them more than ever,” he added.
Promotion Challenges in Liga 2
Speaking about the future, Bumbescu pointed out that the team might struggle for another year without a chance of promotion. He highlighted that previous efforts by club commanders to address the situation have not yielded results.
“It doesn’t depend on the commander. They have made attempts, but there are barriers. We have submitted appeals and made sacrifices, yet some issues go beyond their control. It pains us, as we strive to bring people to support us. We find ourselves in Liga 2 without any hope for promotion. Once we see tangible improvements, investors will be more likely to come on board,” he said.
Bumbescu’s Direct Comments on Munteanu
When asked about the challenges faced by Liga 2, which has half its teams without promotion rights, Bumbescu directed a sharp critique towards Munteanu, the coach of CSM Reșița.
“What’s happening is unbelievable. Next year, we might see 15 teams without promotion rights. I heard Munteanu—he should mind his own business! We’d be better off with just 5 or 6 teams competing. He should remember that wherever he goes, teams have been relegated. Let’s leave the negativity behind! He was a great player, no doubt, but as a coach, he needs to keep his own affairs in check,” Bumbescu remarked.
In Liga 2 this season, 22 teams are participating, with 11 lacking promotion rights, including CSA Steaua, CSM Slatina, and Gloria Bistrița.
Munteanu’s Response and League Concerns
In response, Dorinel Munteanu has emphasized the need for stricter regulations from the Romanian Football Federation (FRF) to prevent financially unstable teams from participating in Liga 2.
“There should be strict rules that prohibit teams with unstable budgets from entering the league. It seems simple to me, but we’re facing issues now that other countries dealt with decades ago. Teams that can’t guarantee a budget shouldn’t be allowed to compete. Whether we play with 7, 5, or 4 teams, it could ultimately help improve football quality. Many teams in both the Superliga and Liga 2 owe significant back pay. Those who demand their rights are often penalized, and without minimal investment in salaries, achieving performance is impossible,” Munteanu stated after the match against Tg. Mureș, which ended in a 2-1 defeat for his team.
