Russia Halts Shipping Through Azov-Don Canal Following Attacks

In response to recent Ukrainian attacks, Russia has decided to halt shipping through the Azov-Don Canal, which impacts the flow of maritime traffic in the area. Reports indicate that this decision follows a significant strike on July 10, during which Ukrainian forces targeted 13 Russian vessels operating in the Sea of Azov.
Commander Robert Brody of the Ukrainian drone forces has reported that a total of 48 Russian vessels have been damaged. Additionally, Russian border forces have communicated to shipping companies that all requests for passage through the Kerch Strait, connecting the Azov and Black Seas, will no longer be accepted starting from 18:10 local time this Friday. The duration of this restriction remains unspecified.
Analysts note that nearly a quarter of Russia’s wheat exports transit through the Sea of Azov. Consequently, futures prices for wheat surged by 4% on the Euronext exchange, reaching a six-week high amid reports of shipping limitations.
Background Context
- The Ukrainian military has indicated that during the night of July 10, they successfully struck 18 vessels used by Russia for military logistics in the Sea of Azov, including 13 tankers, three cargo ships, a ferry, and a support vessel. According to Commander Brody, this operation has resulted in significant losses for Russia, likening the situation to an “Azov branch of Chornobaivka.”
