Ukrainian Official Urges China to Support Ceasefire Amid Ongoing Conflict

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Sibiga is in discussions about a potential visit to China, where he is advocating for Beijing’s support in achieving a ceasefire in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. In a recent meeting with his Chinese counterpart, Sibiga emphasized that endorsing a ceasefire aligns with China’s stated principles for ending the war initiated by Russia.
“We welcome China’s readiness to play a more active role in achieving peace,” stated Sibiga during their talks.
Details regarding the timing of the proposed visit have not been disclosed. However, it comes in the wake of Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko’s recent unannounced meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, where Xi reaffirmed support for Belarus’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Following this, a Chinese representative at the UN Security Council urged both Ukraine and Russia to resume peace negotiations.
Since the onset of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, China has publicly maintained a neutral stance while often aligning its voting patterns at the UN with those of Russia. Reports indicate that China has increased its support for Russia, providing military intelligence, optics for military equipment, rocket fuel, and other resources in early 2024.
In June 2025, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced intentions to collaborate with China to establish a “new world order,” with Xi speaking of the need for Beijing and Moscow to unite the Global South. Further, media reports in May 2026 revealed that around 200 Russians had undergone secret training in China, with some allegedly heading to fight in Ukraine afterwards. The Chinese Foreign Ministry responded by claiming such allegations were attempts to shift responsibility for the conflict onto Beijing, reiterating their commitment to an “objective and impartial” stance while advocating for peace talks and urging parties not to fan the flames of confrontation.
