Belgium’s Rudi Garcia Discusses Balogun’s Role After 4-1 Victory Over USA

Belgium’s head coach Rudi Garcia commented on his team’s impressive 4-1 victory over the United States in the World Cup round of 16. Post-match, he revealed that American striker Folarin Balogun approached him for a conversation.

In Seattle, Belgium showcased a dominant performance, decisively overcoming the U.S. as they advanced towards the World Cup quarter-finals.

The match carried extra weight, particularly following FIFA’s unprecedented decision the day prior, which lifted Balogun’s suspension. This allowed him to participate from the start, although his impact was minimal.

Garcia on the 4-1 Victory: “We Played Masterfully”

Addressing the situation regarding Balogun, Garcia stated, “I spoke to the players about the ongoing matters. Our group is very mature, with leaders who helped us navigate this situation.”

Garcia emphasized the importance of team cohesion, saying, “We prioritize our game principles, whether attacking or defending. I pointed out both the strengths and weaknesses of our opponents, but we do not overanalyze. Adapting to the opponent is not my coaching style.”

When asked if he used the scandal to further motivate his players, Garcia, cited by Reuters, said, “That wasn’t necessary.”

He added, “What truly mattered was our game plan. We aimed to dominate the match, avoid their pressing, and play high up the pitch. We played with mastery, desire, and commitment. It was a wonderful evening for us and an exceptional qualification to the quarter-finals.”

Balogun Approaches Garcia After the Match

Focusing on Balogun’s actions, Garcia revealed, “He came to talk to me. I really appreciated this gesture. It’s not his fault. He’s not the one to blame. That’s exactly what I told him. I truly value that he came to see me.”

Before the match, Garcia expressed his surprise regarding Balogun’s reinstatement, stating, “I didn’t know that for FIFA, July 5 is actually April 1 at the World Cup. It feels like an April Fool’s joke. I’ve never seen anything like this! If I’m right, this is the first time in World Cup history this has happened.”

Belgium will face Spain in the quarter-finals on Friday at 22:00.
