In a significant escalation, Kyiv was the target of an overnight barrage involving 29 missiles fired from various regions in Russia, specifically Bryansk, Oryol, Kursk, Vologda, and Krasnodar. Additionally, drones were launched from several Russian territories and the occupied Donetsk region.

As of 8:30 AM, Ukrainian defense forces reported intercepting 37 X-101 missiles and 326 drones through the use of radio-electronic and unmanned aerial vehicle systems along with mobile fire groups.

There were confirmed hits from 29 ballistic missiles and 18 drones, with debris falling in 16 different locations across the capital. Vitali Klitschko, the mayor of Kyiv, described the overnight strikes as the largest attack on the city to date. A day of mourning was declared in Kyiv on July 7.

Context

  • Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned of an impending massive missile and drone strike by Russia, suggesting that the timing may coincide with significant dates—immediately following the U.S. Independence Day and shortly before a NATO summit in Turkey. He emphasized that the Kremlin seeks to exert pressure on Ukraine through increased civilian casualties.
  • Reports indicate that 11 individuals have died, and nearly 50 have been injured, including children.
