Roberto Martinez Expresses Regret Over Portugal-Spain Match Timing

The upcoming match between Portugal and Spain is shaping up to be the marquee event of the World Cup thus far. Roberto Martinez, the coach of Portugal, has expressed his regret that this significant clash will not take place at a more advanced stage of the tournament.
Scheduled for Monday, July 6, at 22:00, this match will be part of the World Cup knockout phase. Martinez expressed a desire for the match to occur in a later round, perhaps even in the final, emphasizing the complexity of facing Luis de la Fuente’s team.
Martinez Discusses Mutual Respect Ahead of Match
“In preparing for the World Cup, we focus on three group stage matches, where we primarily analyze our opponents. Once we reach the knockout stage, the emphasis shifts to our own team preparation. The opponent is highly respected, as reaching this phase indicates a competitive team,” Martinez noted.
He described the two Iberian nations as sister countries, making the clash a celebration of football. “It’s a pity that this match happens at this level; it would have been a fantastic final, but we must concentrate on our own locker room,” he added.
Martinez acknowledged the significance of this encounter, stating, “We are two teams with very similar ideas, and we both need possession. We have built our teams around individual talents. While it is beautiful and a shame it is not in the final, we must accept the reality. Both Luis de la Fuente and I aim to play eight matches, but unfortunately, only one team will achieve that goal. Tomorrow’s match is about the players; it is truly a proud moment to be in this position, and our role is to bring strength and joy to such an important game,” he concluded, according to reports.
