FIFA’s Heat Plan for World Cup Match in Philadelphia: Players Face 46°C

The second match of the 2026 World Cup knockout stage, featuring France against Paraguay, is set to take place in Philadelphia at 5:00 PM local time, marking the first contest under severe heat conditions.

After a previous match against Iraq that was interrupted for over two hours due to inclement weather, the French team is now confronted with a new challenge: enduring extreme heat both on the field and in the stands.

The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for Philadelphia until 8:00 PM, anticipating temperatures exceeding 38 degrees Celsius along with humidity levels surpassing 40% at the match’s start.

Perceived Temperatures Could Reach 46°C

The perceived temperature during the game is expected to range between 41 and 46 degrees Celsius, making it increasingly difficult for players and fans to cope with the heat. This situation poses a significant challenge for everyone involved, especially those attending the festivities for the 250th anniversary of American independence.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, the encounter between France and Paraguay may rank among the hottest matches in World Cup history. Although FIFA declined to adjust the kickoff time, thunderstorms could occur if the heat abates.

In these challenging conditions, hydration breaks will be crucial, with ice towels provided to players and possibly even ice packs. Players are advised to hydrate thoroughly and consume electrolytes during the intense moments on match day. Additionally, pre-match warm-ups will be shorter than usual.

Paraguay’s Experience in the Heat

Paraguay, accustomed to training in high temperatures in Asunción, might find an advantage in the heat, as noted by local reports.

The city of Philadelphia has introduced specific guidelines to combat the heat, urging residents and tourists to adhere to them. The urban layout, characterized by a lack of trees, extensive paved areas, and tall buildings, exacerbates the heat.

Spending time outdoors in the sun poses health risks, potentially leading to symptoms such as excessive sweating, headaches, weakness, fatigue, and dizziness.

Authorities are encouraging individuals to wear light, comfortable clothing, stay hydrated with plenty of water, avoid alcohol, caffeine, and sugary drinks, and use sunscreen. Controlled climate tents, misting systems along pathways to the stadium, and additional drinking fountains will be available, alongside four “Hospitality Centers” offering water, shade, and medical assistance near NRG Stadium.
