World Cup 2026 Sets New Record for Own Goals

The 2026 World Cup continues to break records, as the own goal scored by Mohamed Hany during the Round of 16 match between Australia and Egypt established a new all-time record for the tournament.
This edition of the World Cup has now witnessed 13 own goals, the highest number ever recorded in a single tournament, according to statistics from Opta.
World Cup Own Goal Record Surpassed
The 2026 tournament will be remembered not only for its thrilling matches but also for this unusual record. The 13 own goals scored so far have surpassed the previous record of 12 from the 2018 tournament.
In the match between Egypt and Australia, the Egyptians took the lead in the 13th minute with a goal from Emam Ashour. However, the Australians equalized in the 55th minute when right-back Mohamed Hany inadvertently diverted the ball into his own net.
This marked Hany’s second own goal of the 2026 World Cup, his first being in the group stage against Belgium, which ended in a 1-1 draw.
Hany, now 30 years old, has become only the second player in history to score two own goals in the same World Cup, following Bulgarian Ivan Vutsov, who achieved this feat in 1966.
Currently playing for Al Ahly, one of Egypt’s premier clubs, Hany and his team will face the winner of the match between Argentina and Cape Verde in the quarterfinals.
Egypt finished the group stage in second place in Group G, which was topped by Belgium, while Iran came in third and New Zealand finished last.
As of now, Paraguay, France, Canada, Morocco, the USA, Belgium, Brazil, Norway, England, Mexico, Spain, Portugal, and Switzerland have all advanced to the knockout stage of the tournament.
