Paraguay Stuns Germany, Advances to World Cup Round of 16

In a stunning upset, Paraguay eliminated Germany in the Round of 16 at the World Cup, triumphing on penalties after a 1-1 draw over 120 minutes of play. Following the final whistle, thousands of fans flooded the streets to celebrate this remarkable victory.
In Asunción, the capital city, fans congregated at the heart of the city, rejoicing after their team’s unexpected success over Germany, securing a spot in the knockout stages of the prestigious tournament. Enthusiastic supporters donned scarves, waved flags, and painted their faces in national colors, gathering in the Panteón area to celebrate for hours. “Who doesn’t jump is German!” became one of the rallying cries during the festivities.
Paraguay’s next challenge will be against the winner of the match between France and Sweden in the upcoming round.
National Holiday Declared in Paraguay Following World Cup Victory
The national team’s success prompted President Santiago Peña to keep his promise and declare June 30 a public holiday across the country. He announced this decision on social media platform X shortly after the match’s conclusion. “Paraguay never surrenders. It’s a public holiday, damn it!” he wrote, as fans embraced the news.
The idea of declaring a public holiday had been suggested a few hours before the match by the Paraguayan government’s spokesperson, who confirmed the president’s intent. Legislation in Paraguay allows the executive to declare up to three additional public holidays per year, providing President Peña the legal framework to formalize this celebratory day for the nation.
