Lukashenko Asserts Unity of Russia, Belarus, and Ukraine Despite Tensions

Lukashenko on the future unity of Russia, Belarus, and Ukraine

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko stated that the nations of Russia, Belarus, and Ukraine will restore their relationships over time. In his remarks, he described Russia and Belarus as a common homeland, suggesting that the division into two states is not the fault of their peoples.

Lukashenko characterized the relationship between these countries as brotherly and friendly, expressing confidence that no force could dismantle this unity. He acknowledged that there are many who might wish to do so. He emphasized, “I have assured representatives of [Ukrainian President Volodymyr] Zelensky that our peoples will come together again, sooner or later. How else can it be? Your relatives are buried in Ukraine. You are working for the benefit of not just Russia but also Belarus, not against Ukraine. How can we break all this? It is impossible. Our people have always lived and cooperated together, and they will continue to do so.”

However, Lukashenko did not clarify how Matvienko’s actions align with the idea of not opposing Ukraine. He expressed hope that relations could improve in the future, though he suggested that first, there needs to be a mental adjustment.

Recently, Lukashenko apologized for criticizing Zelensky, acknowledging that he may have gone too far at times. Meanwhile, on June 22, Belarusian opposition members submitted a report to the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry concerning allegations of Lukashenko’s preparation for war against Ukraine.
