Cape Verde Stuns Uruguay in World Cup Draw, Risks for South Americans

Cape Verde continued to surprise in the World Cup, following their earlier draw with Spain, by holding Uruguay to a 2-2 tie in the second round of Group H.
Uruguay was unable to defeat Cape Verde after managing only a draw against Saudi Arabia in their opening match, finishing 1-1. The team, led by Marcelo Bielsa, is now facing elimination as they prepare to meet Spain in their final group game.
A loss in that match would severely diminish their chances of securing one of the top eight third-place spots, which guarantees progression to the knockout stage.
Cape Verde Makes History with Goal Against Uruguay
The match began with Uruguay creating opportunities, and in the 14th minute, Federico Valverde missed a close chance. Cape Verde scored first in the 21st minute, marking the nation’s inaugural World Cup goal. Kevin Pina found the net with a powerful long-range free kick, taking advantage of Uruguay’s defensive errors.
Uruguay responded just before halftime, with Maxi Araujo equalizing in the 45th minute after a rebound off the crossbar. Araujo then assisted Nicolás Canobbio, who scored in stoppage time, putting Uruguay ahead at the break.
However, Cape Verde remained determined. In the 61st minute, they capitalized on a rare mistake by Uruguay’s goalkeeper Fernando Muslera, as Varela dribbled past him and scored from outside the box.
Minutes later, Cape Verde nearly took a 3-2 lead, but Monteiro’s shot from distance went just over the bar.
Final Moments Full of Drama
Uruguay had a close call when Araujo’s follow-up goal was disallowed for offside after the keeper’s mistake allowed a rebound. With this result, Cape Verde now has 2 points in the group as they prepare to face Saudi Arabia.
Joao Paulo from FCSB did not play in this match but is expected to participate against Saudi Arabia. However, Lopes Cabral, the starting left-back, will be suspended due to a yellow card received in this game.
