Umit Akdag Nears Career-Defining Transfer to Galatasaray

Umit Akdag, a 22-year-old central defender with dual Romanian and Turkish nationality, is close to finalizing a move to Galatasaray. Reports from Turkey indicate that the Super Lig champions are resuming negotiations for the player currently registered with Alanyaspor, aiming to complete the transfer by early July.

Born in Bucharest, Akdag is viewed as a strategic reinforcement for the defensive line of coach Okan Buruk’s squad.

Galatasaray Resumes Negotiations

According to gazetebirlik.com, initial discussions between the two clubs stalled due to Alanyaspor’s financial demands. However, the situation has shifted significantly after Akdag expressed his desire to join Galatasaray.

“Galatasaray, the reigning Turkish champions, has ramped up its transfer market activity. The club aims to secure at least two key signings before the first week of July and is revisiting Umit Akdag’s case. Initial talks with Alanyaspor were hindered by the asking price, but the dynamics changed after the player made his intentions clear,” journalists noted.

Coach Okan Buruk Approves the Move

Coach Okan Buruk sees Akdag as a valuable long-term investment. The 22-year-old defender is praised for his physical attributes and ability to initiate play from the back.

Club officials believe that acquiring Akdag will not only enhance defensive competition but also provide a significant option for the regulation of domestic players.

Additionally, Turkish journalist Kaya Temel confirmed the Istanbul club’s interest. “Galatasaray is seriously focused on Umit Akdag for the Turkish center-back position. He is on the internal transfer list, and Umit is very open to a move to Galatasaray,” he stated.

Choosing Turkey Over Romania

Despite being born in Bucharest and having played for Romania’s U21 national team, Umit Akdag opted to decline call-ups for the senior team. He has made 10 appearances for the Romania U21 side, including participation in the European Under-21 Championship, but ultimately chose to represent Turkey.

Moreover, he acknowledged in Turkish media that he turned down invitations from Romania’s national team. Prior to his final decision, national coach Gică Hagi personally reached out to persuade him to play for Romania, but the defender remained resolute and chose Turkey instead.
