Rusescu Critiques Ronaldo’s Performance in Portugal’s World Cup Opener

Former striker Raul Rusescu, a three-time Romanian champion and the best Romanian footballer of 2012, assessed Cristiano Ronaldo’s performance during Portugal’s first match at the 2026 World Cup, which ended in a disappointing 1-1 draw against the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Following the game, Ronaldo faced a wave of criticism for being both inefficient and selfish, particularly after he took the ball from Bruno Fernandes instead of allowing him to score.

Rusescu, now an analyst for GSP’s programming, indicated that Ronaldo’s teammates also need to take responsibility, suggesting they failed to effectively support the star forward.

Rusescu Highlights Teammates’ Shortcomings

“I’m not defending Ronaldo; he had a very weak game, just like Portugal. However, I expected the other players—Vitinha, Bruno Fernandes, Joao Neves, Nuno Mendes, Bernardo Silva, and Pedro Neto—to do something to get the ball into the box,” Rusescu stated on GSP Live.

He elaborated, saying, “You know you have Cristiano Ronaldo there. When Pedro Neto crosses, the two central defenders are with Ronaldo, and then Joao Neves comes in from the second line and scores. But after that, the offensive movement stopped. They never sent a through ball to open up the field. At one point, Fernandes, Vitinha, and Neves were stepping on each other’s toes, passing endlessly without purpose.”

While Ronaldo’s lack of effective action was a topic of discussion, Rusescu pointed out that he did not receive the necessary passes to succeed. “On paper, Portugal has the best midfield, but they did not show it last night,” he remarked.

Rusescu Defends Ronaldo’s Tactical Intelligence

After Ronaldo’s notable miss—a shot wide of the goal following a set-up from Francisco Conceicao—Thierry Henry criticized Ronaldo’s positioning at FOX Sports, suggesting he was overly focused on scoring individually.

Rusescu rebutted this perspective, saying, “I don’t want to contradict Thierry Henry, but I would love to discuss some footage to explain why Cristiano played very intelligently last night, often staying offside by 5-6 meters. He did this because he understood that the Congolese players were compact in the midfield, and if he positioned himself behind the line, he could exploit a diagonal pass behind the defense.”

He continued, noting that Ronaldo was aware of the lack of space and the team’s tendency to play a slow build-up game that favored short passes over utilizing Ronaldo’s positioning. “He knew that he wouldn’t have room to sprint behind the defense, but in terms of reading the game and interpreting plays, he did it very well. The biggest issue was Bruno Fernandes being almost nonexistent. He needed to play ahead of Vitinha and Joao Neves,” Rusescu stated.

Rusescu concluded, emphasizing, “When you give Cristiano a chance, he will score. But you have to provide him with those opportunities! Bruno Fernandes, stay closer to him, come between the lines, and find solutions. They all played in that congested midfield circle.”
