Lewis Hamilton won the Spanish Grand Prix on Sunday and achieved his first success in Ferrari colors after a race he controlled authoritatively in the second half.
The Briton crossed the finish line almost 20 seconds ahead of George Russell, while Lando Norris completed the podium. The big loser of the day was Kimi Antonelli, who retired with just four laps to go after moving up to second.
Lewis Hamilton dominated after the halfway point of the race
Although the start was controlled by Mercedes, with George Russell in the lead and Hamilton in pursuit, Ferrari's strategy worked perfectly.
The Brit pitted early for his first change, and after the final series of stops and the Virtual Safety Car period caused by Fernando Alonso's retirement, he returned to the circuit ahead of Russell. From that moment there was no more struggle for victory.
Hamilton began to steadily gain a few tenths per lap and increased his lead from 5 seconds to over 10, then 15 and finally almost 20 seconds. For the seven-time world champion it is the first success since the transfer to Ferrari and one of the most important victories of the season.
Antonelli, the nightmare that can change the title fight
The decisive moment of the race came on lap 61. Kimi Antonelli had managed to pass George Russell and moved up to second place, once again confirming the excellent form shown this season.
Just one lap later, however, the Italian slowed suddenly on the straight and had to pull the car onto the grass due to technical issues. The dropout completely changed the configuration of the podium and could have huge consequences in the fight for the world title.
Following the victory in Barcelona and the abandonment of his rival, Hamilton reduced the gap to the leaders of the standings to just 41 points and seriously re-entered the race for the championship.
Ferrari also had emotions with Leclerc
The end of the race was also tense for the other single-seater Ferrari. Shortly after Antonelli's abandonment, Charles Leclerc started to lose pace and reported technical problems. However, the Monegasque managed to continue and take the car to the end, avoiding a double nightmare for the Scuderia.
Russell and Mercedes saved the podium
For Mercedes, the race was one of mixed feelings. George Russell led much of the Grand Prix and looked Hamilton's main challenger, but Ferrari's pace over the final 20 laps was clearly superior.
However, Antonelli's retirement allowed the Briton to move up to second place and deliver an important result for the German manufacturer.
