The most popular ingredient is DEET. Its effectiveness directly depends on the concentration: 10-20% is enough for a 2-3 hour city walk, and 20-50% will protect for 6-8 hours, which is ideal for a long visit to the forest. For children, no more than 10-20% is recommended. Alternative DEET— icaridin (or picaridin), it has a gentler effect on the skin, does not have a strong odor and is suitable for children and those with sensitive skin. The third option is IR3535, a low-toxic component, approved for children over one year old and pregnant women, although it works a little weaker.

Essential oils like citronella, lavender or geranium do not last long – only an hour or two, they can cause allergies and are not suitable for serious protection in the forest or near water.

When choosing a product for a child, experts advise strictly observing the age labeling: DEET is usually allowed from 2-3 years, IR3535 – from one year. For babies under one year old, only mosquito nets and closed clothing. For children, it is better to take creams, lotions or wipes so that the child does not accidentally inhale the aerosol. Do not apply the product to the face: first treat your hands, then the exposed areas of the child’s skin, avoiding the eyes, mouth and abrasions. After a walk, the repellent should be washed off with soap and water.

If redness, itching or a rash appears after application, the product should be washed off immediately, a cold compress should be applied, and in case of a severe reaction, take an antihistamine and consult a doctor.
