Donald Trump will not attend the opening match of the 2026 World Cup on American soil, USA vs. Paraguay, in Los Angeles on Friday.

Donald Trump is increasingly unpredictable. After being whistled at the NBA game, New York Knicks – San Antonio Spurs (111 – 115), the American president will be absent from the debut of the US national team at the 2026 World Cup.

Donald Trump will be replaced by Secretary of State Marc Rubio

The information was confirmed by two people involved in the organization of the match scheduled for Friday to the Axel Springer Global Reporters Network. According to tabloid Bild, Trump will be replaced by his foreign minister, Marc Rubio.

The State Department confirmed that Rubio will lead the US delegation to the game, but did not provide a reason for the president's absence. What is certain is that the decision comes at a time when the US government is facing diplomatic and logistical challenges related to the tournament.

Donald Trump was booed at an NBA game where he dozed off at times

And Trump felt the aversion of the public at the mentioned NBA game, New York Knicks – San Antonio Spurs. The home fans were not impressed with Trump's relationship with New York City and from the first moment he could be seen on the giant video cube in the arena ceiling, the President of the United States was booed.

He stayed in the “Mecca” of basketball until the 4th quarter, when there were about 7 minutes left in the game, after which he left the arena. At times, Trump was not paying attention to what was happening on the court, talking to Adam Silver, the commissioner of the NBA, and there were periods, caught on camera, when the American president appeared to have fallen asleep.

If he will not be in Los Angeles, his Paraguayan counterpart, Santiago Peña (47), will travel to California. He is due to arrive in Los Angeles on Thursday and is expected to stay there for four days. Attending Friday's game is part of his schedule.
