A new famous role for Hugh Jackman, after Wolverine and Van Helsing. The film, based on a successful novel, will be directed by the legendary Ridley Scott

After playing Wolverine, PT Barnum, Van Helsing, Jean Valjean and most recently Robin Hood, actor Hugh Jackman is set to add another classic character to his filmography, the pirate Long John Silver, Variety revealed Monday.

Director Ridley Scott has hired Hugh Jackman to star in a new adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson's 1883 novel Treasure Island.

Ridley Scott will direct the film from a script written by Jack Thorne, the Emmy Award-winning screenwriter of the TV miniseries “Adolescence,” and will produce alongside Michael Pruss through his Scott Free company. Jack Thorne will also serve as executive producer.

Robert Louis Stevenson's tale of “pirates and buried treasure” is one of the most famous—and most frequently adapted—pirate stories ever written. “Treasure Island” centers on young Jim Hawkins, who finds a map to Captain Flint's long-lost fortune and embarks on a perilous journey aboard the Hispaniola.

On board the ship, Jim and the crew face a mutiny led by the cunning one-legged cook, Long John Silver – but in the end they outwit the pirates and get their hands on the gold.

This coming-of-age novel, set in the 18th century, popularized many of the elements specific to pirate stories, including treasure maps marked with the letter “X,” the “Black Spot” symbol, and one-legged sailors with parrots on their shoulders, notes Agerpres.

The feature film project “Treasure Island” is in development as director Ridley Scott prepares for the release of his latest film “The Dog Stars” (20th Century) in August. A new trailer for this post-apocalyptic thriller starring Jacob Elordi, Josh Brolin and Margaret Qualley was released on Monday morning.

Hugh Jackman will soon be seen on the big screen in A24's The Death of Robin Hood, directed by Michael Sarnoski, which opens on June 19.
