Polar explorer, corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences and State Duma deputy Artur Chilingarov has died. He was 84 years old.
In 1991, he led the world's first flight of a heavy transport aircraft Il-76 to Antarctica.
In 2002, he flew a single-engine An-3 aircraft to the South Pole and proved that light aircraft can be used in extreme conditions.
In 2007, he was the first in the world to sink to the bottom of the ocean at the geographic point of the North Pole. For which he received the title of Hero of Russia.
Arthur Nikolaevich is listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the first person to visit both the South and North Poles within six months.
Chilingarov was the first vice-president of the Russian Geographical Society, president of the State Polar Academy and president of the Association of Polar Explorers.
