The SBU showed the wreckage of Shahed, which attacked a nuclear storage facility. What the IAEA said

The Security Service of Ukraine has classified the attack by the aggressor country Russia on a nuclear fuel storage facility near the Chernobyl nuclear power plant as a war crime. The press service of the SBU reported this.

Based on this fact, criminal proceedings were initiated under Part 1 of Art. 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.

“As the investigative and operational group of the SBU established, the Russian armed forces carried out this attack with an unmanned aerial vehicle of the Geran-2 type at 2.05 on June 7. Separate elements of the drone have already been found at the site of the attack. As a result of the explosion, the building for receiving and reloading spent nuclear fuel and the administrative building of the IAEA were damaged,” the report says.

At the same time, the SBU noted that the impact did not affect the production process of the storage facility. The background radiation is normal, there are no casualties.

The International Atomic Energy Agency responded to the attack on social network X and announced a visit by a team of IAEA inspectors to the storage facility to inspect the consequences.

“IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi notes that this incident is deeply concerning because it occurred at a facility where large volumes of nuclear materials are stored, located just a few meters from the attacked building,” the agency emphasized.

Grossi called attacks on nuclear facilities unacceptable and directly contrary to the basic principles of nuclear safety.
