After the explosion of the maritime drone in the Port of Constanța this morning, the Minister of Defense, Radu Miruță, offered some not very coherent explanations about how the Romanian authorities acted and about the information received from Ukraine in the hours leading up to the incident.

During a short press conference, the minister stated that the Ukrainian side informed the Romanian authorities about 10-15 minutes before the deflagration that the drone was carrying explosives. Following this notification, he says, the teams of specialists sent to assess the situation were withdrawn from the area, without being able to answer the question of why, if the drone arrived in the Romanian port around 6:00 in the morning, Ukraine warned us about the risk it represents only around 10:00.

Radu Miruță confirmed that the drone that self-detonated in Constanța Port was part of a group of five maritime drones and that such drones can carry around 300 kilograms of explosives each.

Asked about how this incident was managed, Radu Miruță wanted to specify that the Port of Constanța is not in the area of responsibility of the Romanian Army, the monitoring and management of such situations falling mainly to the Coast Guard and the Romanian Naval Authority.

At the end of his explanations, he also said that, following this incident, the Romanian authorities requested Ukraine that, in similar situations that may generate risks for Romania, notifications should be sent immediately. Also, the Romanian Ministers of Defense and Internal Affairs requested a video conference with their Ukrainian counterparts to analyze the circumstances of the incident and the mode of cooperation between the two sides.
