Jellyfish rarely appear in travel brochures, but meeting them can ruin a long-awaited vacation. In some regions there are especially many of them in mid-summer, while in others it is very rare to see jellyfish. Experts explain this by the characteristics of currents, water temperature and the composition of the marine ecosystem. We tell you which resorts are famous for their relatively clean sea even in high season.
Where is the likelihood of meeting jellyfish minimal?
One of the leaders remains the Red Sea coast in Egypt. Due to the high salinity of the water and the peculiarities of the local ecosystem, mass accumulations of jellyfish rarely occur here. That is why the resorts of Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheikh are popular among lovers of snorkeling and diving.
A good situation is usually observed on many beaches on the east coast of Cyprus. In the area of Ayia Napa and Protaras, the water remains clear for most of the season, and the appearance of large accumulations of jellyfish is considered rather an exception.
Among Russian destinations, tourists often note certain sections of the Black Sea coast in the area of Gelendzhik and Divnomorskoye. Here, a lot depends on weather conditions and currents, but mass invasions of jellyfish occur less frequently than in some other water areas.
Why are there more jellyfish at some resorts than others?
According to the candidate of biological sciences, popularizer of science Ilya Gomyranov, the number of jellyfish depends on several factors: water temperature, sea currents and the amount of plankton. During hot periods or after storms, they can approach the coast even in places where they are usually hardly found.
The expert notes that it is impossible to completely eliminate the possibility of encountering jellyfish at any seaside resort. However, there are regions where natural conditions make such encounters much less likely.
Travel blogger and TV presenter Anton Ptushkin also said in his travels that when choosing a beach holiday, you should pay attention not only to the cost of the tour, but also to the features of a particular coast. Sometimes neighboring resorts of the same sea can differ greatly in the number of jellyfish and water clarity.
The main rule for tourists remains unchanged: before the trip it is worth studying the current situation at the chosen resort. Marine nature changes from year to year, and therefore even the calmest beaches sometimes present surprises.
