Roland Garros provided a historic moment on Tuesday. For the first time in the Open Era, two players from Ukraine met in a Grand Slam quarterfinal, and the winner was Marta Kostyuk, who will meet the Russian Mirra Andreeva in the semifinals of the tournament.
The 15th seed in Paris, the 23-year-old defeated the experienced Elina Svitolina, the tournament's 7th seed, 6-3, 2-6, 6-2, after an hour and 49 minutes of play.
Marta Kostyuk, the first Ukrainian of the Open Era in the semifinals of Roland Garros
The success has a special meaning for tennis in Ukraine. Kostyuk became the first Ukrainian player to reach the semifinals of Roland Garros in the Open Era and only the third representative of the country to reach the penultimate act of a Grand Slam tournament, after Elina Svitolina and Dayana Yastremska.
Instead, for Svitolina, the curse of Paris continues. The former world No. 3 has lost all six quarterfinals played in her career at Roland Garros.
The match pitted two of the most in-form players of the clay season. Kostyuk was coming off titles won in Rouen and Madrid and has now made it 17 consecutive victories on clay. On the other hand, Svitolina had a streak of 10 successes in a row, after the triumph in Rome.
The end of the match was impressive for Marta, who won 13 of the last 14 points of the match.
I dedicate this victory to the Ukrainian people and their resistance. Thanks also to Elina for this historic match and for everything she has done for tennis.

The duel with Mirra Andreeva follows
For a place in the Roland Garros final, Marta Kostyuk will face the Russian Mirra Andreevathe player who eliminated Sorana Cîrstea in the quarterfinals of the Paris tournament. It will be a repeat of the final in Madrid this season, won by the Ukrainian. Furthermore, Kostyuk leads 2-0 in head-to-head meetings since 2026, following wins in Brisbane and Madrid.
Regardless of the result, the semi-final will bring a new Grand Slam finalist as neither player has ever reached the final act of a major tournament.
The schedule of the other quarter-finals
The semi-final draw at Roland Garros is completed on Wednesday, June 3, when the last two quarter-finals of the women's competition are scheduled.
