Ciolacu's reaction after Toma resigned from the party positions: “I'm not interested” / What PSD president Buzău said

“I don't know why and I'm not interested,” said the president of the Buzău County Council, Marcel Ciolacu, on Tuesday, after the mayor of Buzău, Constantin Toma, announced his resignation from the positions of president of the PSD Municipal Organization and first vice-president of the PSD County Organization.
The reaction came after Constantin Toma criticized the “hostile attitude” of the local PSD leadership towards him, saying that he no longer finds himself in the leadership positions from which he resigned.
“I don't know how, I don't know why and I don't care. I don't have political positions in the party, I'm just the president of the County Council. Ask the president of the PSD Buzau Romeo Lungu”, former prime minister Marcel Ciolacu told News.ro.
Romeo Lungu reacted by saying that the decision was predictable, considering the positions expressed by Constantin Toma in the last year.
PSD leader Buzau: “It was natural”
“It was natural. I found out from my colleagues in the county headquarters that he submitted a written resignation from the position of president of the municipal organization and from that of first vice-president of the county organization. It was natural because, following the statements of the last year, he was no longer in this party,” said Lungu, according to the quoted source.
Furthermore, PSD leader Buzău believes that, if he no longer identifies with the current leadership of the party, Constantin Toma should also renounce his PSD membership.
“I think it is natural for him to do, if he still does not find himself in the Social Democratic Party under this leadership, to resign as a member,” said the Social Democratic deputy.
At the same time, Romeo Lungu rejected the idea that the vote of local PSD councilors against some of the mayor's projects represents an act of indiscipline, stressing that local elected officials have the responsibility to analyze each project before approving it.
“There will probably be an interim leadership”
According to Lungu, Constantin Toma's displeasure would have been generated by the fact that some of the PSD councilors supported an amendment by which the debate on a project regarding the modernization of some streets was postponed.
“The local councilors are personally accountable to the citizens of Buzău for what they vote for in the City Council and they are not simple puppets to vote for one project or another. It is important that the projects are discussed and there are consultations before they are put to the vote”, declared the Buzău PSD leader.
Romeo Lungu also claimed that, a few months ago, Constantin Toma would have assumed that he would consult the party leadership and local PSD councilors more often before the meetings of the Local Council, which, in his opinion, would not have happened.
Regarding the future of the municipal organization, PSD Buzau president announced that this week there will be a meeting of the local leadership to determine the next steps.
“We will have a meeting this week with the Office of the Municipal Organization and we will make a decision there. There will probably be an interim leadership until the new leadership is elected,” said Romeo Lungu.
Why did Toma say he resigned
“Dear Buzoians, today, June 2, 2026, I resigned from the two leadership positions I held in the Social Democratic Party, namely president of the PSD Municipal Organization and first vice-president of the PSD County Organization,” Constantin Toma announced on Tuesday, on his Facebook page.
The mayor of Buzău says that in the last two meetings of the Buzău Municipal Local Council, “an important part of the PSD councilors voted against some projects initiated by me, as mayor”.
“Given the hostile attitude of the PSD local leadership and an important part of the local PSD councilors, I appreciate that I no longer find myself in the leadership positions from which I resigned”, mentions Constantin Toma.
