Folk calendar

Fedot Ovsyanik, Seven Virgins

On this day, the Seven Holy Virgins are venerated – seven martyrs who suffered for the faith at the beginning of the 4th century, during the persecution of Christians by Emperor Diocletian.

In Rus', Fedot (Theodotus) was revered as the helper of spring and they said: “When Fedot comes, he will unfurl the last oak leaf.” The future harvest was also judged by the oak tree: “If the top of an oak tree has a edge, you will measure oats with a tub.” This meant that if the oak tree turned its leaves towards Fedot, the spring harvest would be good. If green leaves suddenly began to fall from the oak tree, this was a bad omen and foreshadowed a hungry year.

In addition to oak, the hero of this day was flax – it was sown just for Fedot and the Seven Virgins. So they said: “They sow flax from the seven deer.”
