Hand-husking seeds takes hours, gets your fingers dirty, and sends husks all over the kitchen. However, there is a simple method that allows you to process an entire kilogram in just 25 minutes without calluses or debris.
Prepare the seeds correctly
The main condition for success is dry seeds. Be sure to dry raw specimens in a frying pan or oven, then cool completely. A wet or warm peel does not burst, but stretches, so peeling becomes a pain. Well-dried seeds give a fragile shell that cracks under light pressure.
Use the rolling technique
We will need three things:
- deep bowl;
- kitchen towel;
- wooden rolling pin.
Place 2-3 handfuls of seeds in a bowl and cover with a towel. Roll the rolling pin over the top without pressing hard to crack the peel. After processing, the kernels remain intact, and the shell opens.
Separate the husks with a stream of air
Pour the contents of the bowl into a large container. Bring a fan or stand near an open window. Slowly pour the mixture from one bowl to another – the light husk will fly away, the heavy kernels will remain. If you don’t have any equipment at hand, just blow it gently. The entire kilogram is cleaned in 20–25 minutes without fatigue or black fingers.
What to avoid:
- Do not put a lot of seeds at once – a large portion will split worse
- Don't press as hard as you can with the rolling pin – you'll get crumbs instead of seeds.
- Do not use a blender or coffee grinder – damaged kernels cause bitterness.
- Don't clean the room – the husks will fly everywhere
Store the peeled kernels in a jar and add to salads, cereals, baked goods, or eat just like that, noted experienced housewife Elena Matveeva in her blog (18+).
