Declan Rice (27 years old), integralist in Champions League final, lost to Arsenal on penalties, 3-4, after 1-1 with PSG in the 120 minutes of play, commented on the result of the match and the outcome of this season.
Appearing in the Champions League final for the second time in the club's history, Arsenal were once again beaten after leading 1-0. If in 2006 Barcelona reversed the result in regulation time, today PSG equalized at 1, then decided the match in penalty kicks.
How did Declan Rice, a key man of Mikel Arteta, comment?
Declan Rice: “Incredible season! Mikel Arteta has told us how much he loves us as a group”
“It's devastating to lose a Champions League final on penalties. We tried to put things into perspective, considering how far we've come as a group – it's been an incredible season and this was our 63rd game tonight.
We've given absolutely everything up to this point and the penalty shootout is just like that – you win or you lose. Some of the best teams in history have lost on penalty kicks.
We win together and lose together. I'm so proud of this group and these guys. What a season! It was incredible and I can't praise everyone enough. Obviously I'm broken, but I'm trying to put things in perspective, from when I started last July to where we are now.
Against Paris you have to be mentally connected throughout the whole match. I'm sure a lot of people would have wanted a game like Bayern gave them, but that's exactly what they want – that's how they end up scoring five or six goals against their opponents.
You have to be extremely resilient, very focused and communicate a lot. Hats off to them, they are a great team with a great coach and top personalities. They have lost enormously over the years, and now their time has come.
We will move forward and continue to try to achieve something great. We're all down – it's the Champions League final and the stakes are huge. It is cruelty. But look, he (no – Mikel Arteta) just told us how much he loves us as a group. I gave absolutely everything.
I think we've come a long way, and this is just the beginning. I crossed the finish line in the Premier League and it was a dream come true. That would have been another step forward – it wasn't to be, but we keep building. We move forward and stay positive. This moment is not going to define us,” Rice said on TNT Sports.
Declan Rice on Eze and Gabriel: “We wouldn't have won the Premier League without them”
Asked about teammates who missed penalties, Eberechi Eze and Gabriel, Rice shielded them:
“They're devastated. To miss a penalty in a Champions League final is never nice, but we love them, we're with them, and things like that happen in football.
They won't be the last players to miss penalties in the finals. Everyone has missed a penalty at some point and without those two this season we wouldn't have won the Premier League – that's for sure.”
