The political scientist Cristian Preda reacted harshly after the incident in the center of the city of Galați, where a Russian drone crashed into a block of flats, causing an explosion and a fire on the 10th floor. He criticized the way in which the Romanian authorities have so far managed the threats generated by drones that violate the national airspace.
“A Russian drone exploded on a block of flats in Galati. The defense system did not work. Previous experiences in Tulcea county were treated superficially. We need an intelligent and effective solution. Urgent, I would add. We must not wait for one to fall on Calea Victoriei to properly organize the defense of the country!”, wrote Preda, in a message on Facebook.
His criticisms come after, on the night of Thursday to Friday, a drone that entered Romanian airspace crashed on the roof of a block of flats in Galati, in the context of a new Russian attack on Ukraine, near the border with Romania.
The impact was followed by an explosion and fire, and about 70 people were evacuated. Two people were slightly injured and required medical attention. Two other tenants also suffered a panic attack.
According to the Ministry of Defense, two F-16 fighter jets were lifted from the ground during the alert.
“The pilots of the aircraft had authorization to engage the targets for the entire duration of the alert”, said the MApN, in a press release, about why the drone crashed on a block in the city of Galați.
But the drone was not intercepted before the impact. MApN did not specify why the decision was not taken to shoot down the drone that entered the airspace of our country.
