On this day the Russian Orthodox Church honors the memory of St. Theodore the Sanctified.
The people called Theodore (Fedor) Zhitnik, since his holiday was considered the last day suitable for sowing spring crops. So they said: “Zhitnik’s concern is to harrow the barley field.” In honor of Fyodor's Day, porridge was served – semolina, barley, buckwheat or millet.
The rowan tree would certainly bloom on Fyodor. By this sign, people learned that summer warmth had finally established itself and would no longer be replaced by frost. Moreover, bird cherry – the main harbinger of cold mornings – had already faded by this time.
