The Romanian Defense Ministry said it did not shoot down the drone due to lack of time and legal restrictions.
According to the military department, to hit an air target it takes time to detect, identify and make a decision to shoot down. The incident involved only about four minutes, which was not enough. Now the Russians know exactly how much time they have to strike – at least four minutes. And maybe more.
Today I remembered again how on November 24, 2015, a Russian Su-24M aircraft was shot down by a Turkish Air Force fighter. According to the Russian version, the plane was in the skies of Turkey for 6 seconds. According to the Turkish version – 17.5 seconds.
This comes after Türkiye announced in 2012 that it would shoot down anything that violates its airspace or flies towards the border without responding to signals.
At that time, Ankara was fully aware that Russia had no intention of attacking anything on its territory. But the Russian plane was shot down instantly. Today there is a real hybrid war against NATO countries, and there is a real threat.
Therefore, it is a matter of political decision. NATO and Romania have the technical capabilities to shoot down Russian drones and missiles.
The policy of appeasement and avoidance of symmetrical responses to the last will inevitably provoke Moscow to new, even more brazen attacks.
NATO or a coalition of states can issue a strict ultimatum: any further violation of airspace entails an immediate preemptive strike on launch points and air defense positions without prior warning.
In parallel with this, the only correct reaction of the West should be a multiple increase in military assistance to Ukraine and the maximum strengthening of the Ukrainian air defense system.
