The accountant misappropriated over PLN 1 million from public accounts. It happened during L4

The District Prosecutor's Office in Legnica announced on Wednesday the verdict passed by the court in Legnica against 70-year-old chief accountant Elżbieta P. The woman misappropriated money from the accounts of the District Construction Supervision Inspectorate in Góra, the Primary School in Jemielno and the Primary School in Irządzy (Lower Silesian Voivodeship). She was sentenced to four years' imprisonment. He is also prohibited from practicing as an accountant for five years, and must return all the money he stole.

The accountant revealed the reason for the misappropriation of money
The proceedings of Elżbieta P. lasted from January 1, 2009 to February 17, 2025. As the chief accountant, she was authorized to use the bank accounts of the above-mentioned entities and had access to electronic banking and a qualified signature.
“The case came to light when Elżbieta P. had been on sick leave since February 2025. Irregularities in the accounts were discovered by a replacement accountant employed in the same office,” says Liliana Łukasiewicz, spokeswoman for the District Prosecutor's Office in Legnica, in a statement.

Then it went quickly. School principals and the building inspectorate submitted their notifications. Irregularities were detected everywhere. Elżbieta P. was charged. During the investigation, the woman had trouble explaining why she committed the crimes. However, she revealed one of her motives – she was to help her family financially. None of her relatives suspected her of illegal activities.
The charges concerned the misappropriation of property of significant value. This type of practice is punishable by one year and six months to 15 years in prison. The prosecutor assessed the four-year prison sentence as just. The court's ruling is not final.
