While some tourists continue to choose crowded resorts, others are looking for places where silence, clear water and the feeling of a real trip are still preserved. This summer, the island of Favignana, a small corner off the coast of Italy, which many are already calling “the new Maldives of the Mediterranean,” unexpectedly began to rapidly gain popularity on social networks.
Videos with azure bays, white cliffs and an incredibly hued sea collect millions of views on social networks. Tourists admit: a few years ago, it was mainly the Italians themselves who knew about Favignana. Now the island is increasingly appearing on lists of the most beautiful places in Europe for the summer of 2026, writes euronews.com.
Why did the island go viral?
Favignana is part of the Aegadian Islands, next to Sicily, but is very different from the popular tourist destinations. There are almost no huge hotels, noisy embankments and endless rows of sun loungers.
The main reason for its popularity is the water of an unusual turquoise color and atmospheric bays reminiscent of scenes from a movie. The beach of Cala Rossa, which tourists call one of the most beautiful in the Mediterranean, is especially often shown on social networks.
What attracts tourists
There is no usual resort rush on the island. Instead of shopping centers there are fishing boats and small family cafes. Instead of noisy parties, there are sunsets over the rocks and bike rides.
Many travelers come here specifically for:
- clear water for snorkeling
- secluded coves
- atmospheric streets without crowds
- fresh seafood
- feeling of a “non-tourist” place
Traveler's personal experience
Travel blogger Murad Osmann said in one of his summer reviews that he was surprised by the atmosphere of the island.
“Now many people are looking not for luxury, but for emotions. In Favignana, there is a feeling that time is slowing down. You just look at the sea and understand that there is no need to rush anywhere,” the blogger noted.
According to him, the island will especially appeal to those who are tired of crowded resorts and want “the Mediterranean without the noise.”
Tourism market experts note: in 2026, it is small and lesser-known destinations that will become the main trend among travelers.
