Many summer residents have already sowed carrots and beets. But there are also those who are just planning to do this in the coming days. If the root crops are not yet in the ground, now is the time to choose the right moment for planting.
General rules: what to pay attention to
The main reference point is soil temperature. Both carrots and beets are cold-resistant crops. Their seeds can germinate even in soil heated to just +5°C. But this process will be long. Especially carrots – their seeds are already difficult to germinate.
The optimal ground temperature for germination is +10°C. In such conditions, sprouts emerge faster and more friendly. It is advisable to keep beets a little warmer – about +12°C.
“Not everyone has a soil thermometer. Therefore, it’s easier to focus on the air temperature. When it’s stable outside +12…+15°C, and strong and prolonged cold returns are a thing of the past, you can start planting,” shares the Zen channel “Sadoezh” (12+).
Folk landmarks: when nature prompts
Several signs indicate that it is time to sow root crops:
- the coltsfoot is in full bloom;
- the leaves have already blossomed on the birch tree;
- bird cherry blossoms;
- Daffodils are blooming en masse.
- Preparing the bed before sowing
The beds are probably already ready for planting. But if you still haven’t gotten around to them, it is recommended to do a few simple things right before sowing:
- Sprinkle the beds with sand to loosen the soil.
- Add compost at the rate of half a bucket per square meter.
- Add ash if the soil is acidic.
- You can apply any complex fertilizer for root crops.
- Carefully walk through the garden bed with a rake, incorporating all additives into the soil and simultaneously removing weeds, sticks, stones and other debris.
- Water the bed and mark the furrows at a distance of 20 centimeters from each other.
- After this, you can start sowing. It is better to pre-soak the seeds – this way they will sprout faster.
