“Congratulations to Cristian Mungiu for his second Palme d'Or at Cannes, an extraordinary performance. Congratulations to the entire film team, with many Romanians, and to Sebastian Stan in the lead role”, the head of state said on Facebook.
Nicușor Dan states that he appreciates Cristian Mungiu's films “that they ask questions, that they walk the fine line between two or more conflicting sets of values.”
“This, for me, is the meaning of art: knowing the human from as many perspectives as possible. It is also a recognition of the new wave of Romanian cinema, with Cristi Puiu, Corneliu Porumboiu, Cătălin Mitulescu and all the others.
They had the courage to express themselves differently than the cinema before them, to relate directly and capture the questions of a society in transformation, thus often reaching universality.”
He concludes by saying that “contemporary Romanian film is an excellent calling card for Romania, and the administration must do much more to use it for the benefit of Romania and Romanian cinema.”
For his part, interim Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan congratulated the director, adding that “it is a success that speaks of talent, work and the way Romanian culture can reach the big international spaces.”
“Congratulations to Cristian Mungiu for the prize he won at the Cannes Film Festival.
It is a success that speaks of talent, work and the way Romanian culture can reach the big international spaces.
We are happy to see a Romanian filmmaker appreciated at the highest level and we thank him for the image he carries forward about Romania”, Bolojan sent on Facebook.
Cristian Mungiu won the big trophy with the film “Fjord”, a drama inspired by a real case, which provoked strong reactions both among the public and international critics. It is the second Palme d'Or in the career of the Romanian director, after the success obtained in 2007 with the film “4 months, 3 weeks and 2 days”.
