The Ministry of Emergency Situations explained how to use a power bank without the risk of explosion

23 May 16:50

The Ministry of Emergency Situations in Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug gave recommendations on how to choose and use portable chargers correctly so that they do not catch fire.

The reason for the reminder was a recent incident in Surgut, where a power bank caught fire in an elevator in a girl’s backpack, writes Vestnik of the Surgut Region. Serious consequences were avoided, however, the department advised: if you find smoke in the elevator, the main thing is not to panic. You need to press the button to call the dispatcher, report what happened, call for help and not try to open the doors yourself.

To prevent such situations from recurring, the Ministry of Emergency Situations recommends purchasing only certified power banks and chargers, using suitable cables and adapters, not leaving equipment unattended while charging, and avoiding overheating or damage. In any emergency you should call 112.

We would like to add that in March of this year, new rules for the carriage and use of portable batteries on board came into force. It is prohibited to charge devices during a flight; the capacity should not exceed 100 Watt/hour (27 thousand mAh). Batteries for laptops and professional equipment must be agreed upon in advance. Power banks with a capacity exceeding 160 Watt/hour are prohibited for transportation.
