The United States of America is concerned about the increased activity of the aggressor country of the Russian Federation in the Baltic region and is closely monitoring the development of the situation together with its NATO allies. This was stated by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on May 22 during a conversation with reporters at the meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Helsingborg, broadcast by Sky News.
Such actions are concerning because of the risk of escalation, he said.
“This is a concern. There is always a risk of escalation, right? We understand that. These countries obviously feel threatened for objective reasons. This is a worrying situation because there is always a risk that these things could escalate into something more. And this is always possible. So we are concerned about this and are closely monitoring the situation, and also working with our NATO allies on this issue and constantly updating information,” the Secretary of State explained.
He stressed that the main problem is the possibility of incidents escalating into a wider conflict with serious consequences, which the United States is trying to avoid.
