“Punishment for the West”. The media comments on Donald Trump's decision

However, the Madrid-based daily El Pais and the Portuguese SIC television note that the announcement of sending more American soldiers to Poland is a sign that Trump continues to act contrary to his previous declarations.

“US President Donald Trump has once again withdrawn from a decision announced on a grand scale. He announced the withdrawal of troops from Europe as part of retaliatory actions against NATO countries for what he believes is the lack of support from allies. Now, however, he has announced on social media that he will send an additional 5,000 soldiers to Poland,” wrote “El Pais.”

Both “El Pais” and another Spanish daily “El Mundo” noted that the American president placed his good relationship with Polish President Karol Nawrocki at the center of the decision changing Trump's previous plans. They remind us that Donald Trump sympathized with Nawrocki even before he took over as head of state in 2025.

“El Mundo” notes that the US president directing 5,000 American soldiers to Poland somehow punishes Western European countries, such as Germany, for their passivity or protests against the American attack on Iran.

The Madrid newspaper reminds that Trump's announcement at the beginning of May of his intention to withdraw 5,000 American soldiers from Germany was a form of punishing this country for the words of Chancellor Friedrich Merz. He not only criticized the conduct of the American operation against Iran, but also said that Tehran had humiliated Washington in the Middle East.

In turn, the Lisbon television stations SIC and RTP note that Trump's announcement of sending additional American troops to Poland coincided with Russian-Belarusian military exercises involving nuclear weapons, which are taking place in both countries.

Portuguese commentators point out that Poland's military strengthening will in fact support the entire eastern flank of NATO, where the war between Russia and Ukraine is still ongoing and the threat from Moscow continues unabated.

They note that it was the countries from the eastern part of the EU that made the strongest efforts to ask the US authorities to strengthen the American contingent there.

“Poland was one of the Eastern EU NATO members that sought to strengthen the presence of American troops on its territory, just like Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Romania did,” summarized the Portuguese portal Sapo.
