Steve McClaren (65), the coach who created nightmares for star players, reached an agreement with Rotherhamteam newly relegated to England's fourth tier. The renowned technician will occupy the position of “Head of Football”, a newly created position in the team's organizational chart.

According to Rotherham's official statement, the post involves “strategic leadership and oversight of our football operations with the aim of rebuilding the club following relegation from Sky Bet League One”.

“McClaren's appointment will enable the club to establish a sustainable structure that will enhance the club's effectiveness across its departments, both on and off the pitch, and will see him become highly influential in his advice to the Chairman and Board of Directors on all football-related decisions, the most immediate of which is the appointment of a new manager/head coach of the first team.”

The former Manchester United second-half will lead and manage the recruitment and appointment process of the candidate selected to fill the position and define the performance expectations and footballing philosophy for that individual and associated staff.

The club will use Steve's extensive football experience in every aspect of its processes, from player recruitment and squad planning – where he will work closely with our director of football recruitment, Rob Scott – to day-to-day decision-making,” Rotherham said in a statement.

  • Steve McClaren has an impressive resume. He was head coach at: Middlesbrough, Twente, Wolfsburg, Nottingham Forest, Derby, Newcastle. He was Erik Ten Hag's assistant at Manchester United. He also held the position of second in the national team of England, Darlington and QPR. He was the England coach in 2006-2007.

Steve McClaren was on the bench for Middlesbrough in the “double” with Steaua in 2006 in the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup. After 1-0 in the first leg and 2-0 on “Riverside” in the 30th minute, the red-blues were defeated 2-4.
