The initial hypothesis was a minor stroke, but Bumbescu's first investigations ruled out this possibility.

Bumbescu, champion in Romania with 3 different teams

Bumbescu's career is linked to Steaua, for which he played for 8 seasons, between 1984 and 1992. He won in the red-blue colors five championships, four cups, but also two international trophies, the European Champions Cup in 1986 and the European Supercup a year later.

Before arriving at Steaua, he played at Craiova University between 1978 and 1980, then two years each at Dinamo and FC Olt Scornicesti. He won the championship with 3 different teams: in addition to the 5 with Steaua, in 1980 with Craiova University and in 1982 with Dinamo.

He played for the national team 15 times, debuting in June 1986 in a 3-1 Romania – Norway.
