Sorana Cîrstea (36 years old, 27th place WTA) had a story from the 1000 points tournament in Rome, where she reached the semifinals, when she was defeated by Coco Gauffwho later lost the title in the match with Elina Svitolina. He returned to Romania on Saturday, where he addressed several topics directly from the airport.

Sorana managed in what is probably her last year on the circuit an extraordinary performance, and from the beginning of next week she will be the 21st player in the world, equaling her top in the WTA hierarchy.

On Saturday morning he returned from Foro Italico and directly from the airport he spoke about the last week spent in Rome, about the desire to climb the world ranking, the retirement at the end of this season and a possible participation in the Tournament of Champions.

Sorana Cîrstea returned to the country, after the tour in Rome: “This is the greatest joy, that all the work is crowned”

“It was an extremely pleasant tournament, I am very satisfied with the level I showed and all the emotions and everything I experienced in these days in Rome.

(no. You said you wanted a Top 20 this year) Yes, of course, you want it when you're so close. We started the year without pressure from the point of view of the ranking, the pressure was on the things to improve from the point of view of the game. I try to continue in the same way, not to think about the ranking and to improve the things that depend on me.

(no. How to beat the world leader) It's nice, it's a nice feeling and I think it shows that what I do, how I work and how disciplined and professional I am, can be seen. This is the greatest joy, that all the work is crowned”, said Sorana, upon returning to the country, quoted by as.ro.

Sorana Cîrstea, asked again about the withdrawal

“Every day I hear that, from every person. Like I said, I'm enjoying every single day, it's been an amazing year for me, far beyond expectations and I'm enjoying what I'm living. I'm very grateful to this sport and we're not even halfway through the year and I hope it continues like that.

The most important thing is to be healthy, the rest will come. Again, it's an extremely beautiful year for me, I enjoy every single week, I'm with people who love me, everything that happens to me comes after many years of work”, said Sorana, looking at the retirement decision.

Asked if she could now surpass her performance in 2009, when she reached the quarter-finals at Roland Garros, Sorana added: “Whatever is possible, I did things in a certain way and I will do the same, not focusing on the result, but on what I have to do every day, on work and discipline, and the results are a consequence of this work.”

This was another reason why I wanted to finish after 20 years, it is a beautiful number, an extremely long career, I never imagined that at this age I would still be playing at this level.

It is a joy, I love tennis, I am extremely close to this sport, I like to see it, live it, play it. I've had results in recent years, probably now this attention is also due to the fact that it's my last year, usually people withdraw when they don't play so well anymore.

Things weren't that different, I'm a pretty withdrawn person in my bank with people who have been with me for years. What made me enormously happy is the Romanians' love for tennis and for me, I was impressed by the affection I received from them, that's why I still play, for emotions, I know I'll miss them.

What would Sorana Cîrstea say now to the 20-year-old player

“I would tell her to smile more, to enjoy tennis more, that everything will be fine, to continue to be disciplined, professional, that all the sacrifices are worth it. Romania is home, I only have three days, on Tuesday I will go to Roland Garros, it's a short period, but it's short because I played well.

I'm glad that I don't have time to do many things, we are before a Grand Slam, all the attention is on recovery, to bring the body to 100%, we will start training there.

It's far (no participation in the Tournament of Champions), anything is possible in sports, but it's very far”Sorana concluded.
