Chivu's offensive machinery continues to impress
Inter Milan is going through one of the best seasons in recent decades. After clinching their 21st Serie A title, Cristi Chivu's side added the Coppa Italia to the club's display this week with a 2-0 win over Lazio at the Stadio Olimpico.
Inter thus succeeds in the first domestic event since the 2009/10 season, when the team prepared by Jose Mourinho won the historic “triple”. The current coach of the Milanese, Cristi Chivu, was then part of the team that dominated Europe, and now the Romanian is writing history also from the position of technician, since the first season on Inter's bench.
Inter are coming off an impressive run of results and have scored at least two goals in each of their last eight official matches.
In Serie A, the Milanese scored at least two goals in 26 of the 36 games played and reached 27 victories in the championship. With two rounds remaining, the “nerazzurri” can still equal the second best performance in the club's history in a Serie A season.
In addition, the form at home against Verona is a crushing one. Inter have won their last eight head-to-head matches played at the “San Siro” and have not lost against Hellas in the championship for 29 matches.
Verona, already relegated to Serie B
On the other hand, Hellas Verona comes to Milan without a real stake. The relegation was confirmed since the end of last month, after an extremely poor season for the gialloblu formation. Verona have picked up just two points in their last eight matches and have scored just twice in that stretch.
Interim manager Paolo Sammarco's side are struggling offensively and have gone without a goal in 19 league games this season, coming close to equaling the club's record deficit set in 1989.
Gift Orban, the team's top scorer with seven goals, is excluded from the squad for disciplinary reasons, so the visitors' attack will be led by Scotsman Kieron Bowie, the author of Verona's last three Serie A goals.
Lautaro Martiez wants the top scorer title
Cristi Chivu could make more changes after the Coppa Italia final and after the party that followed the triumph in Rome.
The only important absentee for Inter is Hakan Calhanoglu, injured in the thigh.
Instead, Lautaro Martinez is announced as the starter, with the Argentinian having a four-goal lead in the Serie A top scorers and being very close to the championship's “top scorer” title.
Federico Dimarco is also having an excellent season. The Italian defender recently surpassed Luis Figo's record for most chances created in a Serie A season for Inter over the past 20 years.
Inter's last failure came in the Derby della Madonnina, more than two months ago, and the Italian champions start as big favorites in the duel with Verona as well.
