With his first animated film, the director of “Parasite” wants to surpass legendary names: “I felt it was my chance”

Bong Joon-ho, who won three Oscars and two Palme d“Or at Cannes for “Parasite”, makes his first animated film. “Ally,” its producers say, is the story of a squid living in the depths of the Pacific Ocean and shows how “meetings between humans and creatures of the deep can reshape both worlds.”
The South Korean director told reporters present at the Cannes Film Festival that he hopes to achieve a production on par with those made by Japanese animation master Hayao Miyazaki and George Miller, the Australian famous for “Babe”, AFP wrote.
“I always wanted to create a great action scene that could surpass the great ones that George Miller or Miyazaki created, and I felt that this film was my chance to realize that ambition,” he told Variety magazine.
Bong, who has gained a large following for productions such as the sci-fi “Snowpiercer,” has already made a creature film, “Okja,” starring Paul Dano and Tilda Swinton, in 2017.
“Ally” will be released in 2027
The South Korean director admitted that his fans “might be surprised that it's an animation.”
“But once they actually see the film” next year, “it will be quite familiar to them and they might be happy to see my signatures,” the director added.
Bong, 56, has been working on the film on and off for nearly seven years and released the first images of the feature last month. It is expected to be completed in the first half of 2027 and launched later that year.
