Chelsea and Manchester City they met on Saturday night in the 145th FA Cup final. At Wembley Stadium, the “citizens” prevailed 1-0 and won the trophy after four years, thanks to a spectacular goal scored by Antoine Semenyo in the second half.
The final had a balanced pace and a lot of tension, and in addition to the tactical duel between the two teams, the first half also brought a controversial refereeing phase.
The first half, dominated by Manchester City
Manchester City started the game better and quickly controlled possession. Antoine Semenyo was one of the most active players of the “citizens”, while Erling Haaland had the first great opportunity after an error in the defense of the Londoners, but the Norwegian striker did not fit.
In the 27th minute, City managed to send the ball into the goal, but the effort was correctly ruled out for offside. Matheus Nunes, in an irregular position, served Haaland perfectly, who pushed the ball into the net without emotion.
Chelsea tried to respond through Joao Pedro and Malo Gusto, but the Londoners had difficulty breaking down the opposing defence. The end of the first half, however, brought the most controversial phase of the match.
Joao Pedro went down in the City box after a contact with Khousanov, and the Chelsea players vehemently demanded a penalty. The referee allowed play to continue and the decision immediately sparked heated debate at Wembley.
Semenyo decided the final with a spectacular execution
After a balanced first half, Manchester City finally found the way to the goal in the 72nd minute. The “Citizens” built an excellent collective phase, Haaland found Antoine Semenyo perfectly in the box, and the striker finished spectacularly with his heel, with no chance for the Chelsea goalkeeper.
Chelsea tried to force the equalizer at the end, but the defense of Guardiola's team held out without much emotion.
City's first FA Cup in four years
For Manchester City, the success at Wembley represents the trophy after a four-year titleless spell and the eighth FA Cup in the club's history. The “Citizens” also became the first team to reach four consecutive FA Cup finals.
On the other hand, Chelsea miss the chance to win the ninth FA Cup trophy in their history. The Londoners' last success in the competition remains that of the 2017/18 season.
The two formations have been the dominant teams in the competition for the last decade. Since the 2016/17 season, Chelsea and Manchester City have the most wins, most goals scored and most clean sheets in the FA Cup.
This season, Manchester City have also won the League Cup and are battling Arsenal for the Premier League title.
