Yellow flood code on rivers in 18 counties until Sunday. Hydrologists' warning

The National Institute of Hydrology and Water Management (INHGA) issued, on Friday, for Saturday and Sunday, a yellow flood code valid for the south-western part of Romania, when significant flows are expected on slopes, torrents and streams, rapid floods on small rivers with possible local flooding and increases in flows and levels on some rivers, according to News.ro.

According to the quoted source, the hydrographic basins targeted by the INHGA warning are Crisul Alb, Mureş, Timiş, Bârzava, Caraş, Nera, Cerna, Danube – the small tributaries related to the upstream sector of the Orşova Hydrological Station, Jiu, Olt, Calmătui, Vedea, Argeş and Ialomiţa, when in the interval of May 16 at 2 p.m. – May 17 at 16:00 there may be significant runoff on slopes, torrents and streams, flash floods on small rivers with possible local flooding and increases in flows and levels on some rivers.

These phenomena can occur as a result of the precipitation forecast for the next 48 hours, the yielding of the water from the snow layer in the high mountain area and the propagation, so that the INHGA specialists have issued a Yellow Flood Code.

“In the interval 16.05.2026 at 14:00 – 17.05.2026 at 16:00 on the rivers of the hydrographic basins: Crișul Alb – upstream basin SH Gurahonţ and the tributaries related to the downstream sector SH Gurahonţ (counties: Hunedoara and Arad), Mureş – the tributaries related to the downstream sector confluence with the Târnava river (counties: Alba, Sibiu, Hunedoara and Arad), Timiş – upstream basin SH Sadova and related tributaries downstream SH Sadova – upstream SH Lugoj, Pogăniş – upstream basin Cadar Duboz, Bârzava – upstream basin SH Moniom and related tributaries downstream SH Moniom – upstream SH Gătaia (counties: Caraş Severin and Timiş), Caraş, Nera (Caraş Severin county), Cerna – upper basin and middle and lower basin tributaries (counties: Gorj and Caraş Severin), Danube – small tributaries related to the upstream sector of SH Orşova (counties: Caraş Severin and Mehedinţi), Jiu – upstream basin of SH Sadu and tributaries related to the downstream sector of SH Sadu – upstream confluence with the river Gilort (counties: Hunedoara and Gorj), Gilort (Gorj county), Motru – upper basin and middle and lower basin tributaries (counties: Gorj and Mehedinţi), Jiu – right tributaries related to the downstream sector confluence with the Motru river – upstream SH Podari (counties: Mehedinţi and Dolj), Olt – tributaries related to the downstream sector confluence with the Cibin river (counties: Sibiu, Vâlcea, Argeş, Gorj, Olt and Dolj), Calmătui (counties: Olt and Teleorman), Vedea – upper basin and tributaries middle and lower basin (counties: Argeş, Olt and Teleorman), Argeş – upper basin and tributaries middle and lower basin (counties: Argeş, Dâmboviţa, Giurgiu, Teleroman and Ilfov), Ialomiţa – upstream basin SH Moroeni and the tributaries related to the downstream sector Moroeni SH – upstream Siliştea Snagovului SH (counties: Dâmboviţa, Prahova and Ilfov), Prahova – upper basin and middle and lower basin tributaries (counties: Prahova and Ialomiţa)”, states the cited source.

The specialists mention that the predicted potentially dangerous hydrological phenomena can also occur on the lower level tributaries of the rivers marked on the map, as well as on the unregistered watercourses, in the targeted hydrographic basins.
