FC Romania, one of the most famous sports projects of the Romanian diaspora in Great Britain, has officially announced its dissolution after exactly 20 years of existence.
The club founded by the Romanian community in London sent an emotional statement in which it explained the reasons that led to the termination of the activity.
The reason for the dissolution of FC Romania: lack of a sports base
The management of the club conveyed, in a part of the press release fully published on Facebook, that the main reason for the disappearance is the impossibility of finding a stable sports base for the next season.
“FC Romania announces that, after 20 years of activity, the club is forced to cease its activity at the level of non-league football, due to the lack of a stable sports base for the next season.
In the last 14 years, FC Romania has operated through a groundshare agreement with Cheshunt FC. At the beginning of February 2026, the club was informed that, starting from the next season, it will no longer be able to continue using this sports base,” the club said.
Officials explained that they had been trying to find solutions in and around London for the last few months, but the high costs and lack of available infrastructure made it impossible to continue the project.
“We have been unable to find a workable solution that would allow the club to continue operating to the standards required by non-league football“, the club's press release also states.

The incredible story of a team created by Romanian workers
FC Romania was founded in 2006 and quickly became a symbol for the Romanian community in England. The club started in the Sunday leagues, basically the grassroots of English football, and gradually rose to the semi-professional echelons.
The lot consisted almost exclusively of Romanians who worked in construction, as drivers, electricians or cooks, and the matches had become true meeting points for the London diaspora.
The players were nicknamed “Wolves”, and the team wore tricolor equipment to preserve the Romanian identity.
FC Romania even reached Wembley
Throughout its existence, the club has attracted the attention of the British and international media.
BBC Sport, The Times, VICE or Gazzetta dello Sport have published extensive materials about the story of the team made up of Romanian workers who eliminated traditional opponents in the FA competitions.
“The name FC Romania was also displayed at the legendary Wembley stadium“, the club officials said.
Highlights include appearances in the preliminary rounds of the FA Cup and promotion to the Isthmian League, the equivalent of England's eighth tier.
The club had also become famous for the atmosphere created at matches. At important matches in the FA Cup, the stadium was full of Romanian supporters, with flags, drums and torches, and the English press described the atmosphere as “South American”.
FC Romania also received awards for social integration in Great Britain, being considered an example of how sport can unite immigrant communities.
