An anti-government protester in Serbia, hit by a car. The latest incident in a longer series of attacks

A driver who drove his car into anti-government demonstrators in the center of Belgrade, injuring a nine-year-old man, was detained for attempted murder, the police announced on Thursday, reports AFP, taken over by Agerpres.

In the images circulated on social networks, you can see a car reversing and throwing the man to the ground. He was participating in a 16-minute silent protest as a tribute to the victims of the accident at a train station in Novi Sad that resulted in 16 deaths in 2024, which has become an almost daily ritual in Serbia.

The police announced that the driver was detained and placed in preventive detention for “attempted murder with aggravating circumstances”. For their part, the doctors declared that the injured is in a stable condition at the hospital.

The clip below contains images with strong emotional impact.

It is the latest car attack in a series directed against demonstrators in this protest movement that denounces the endemic corruption in the country.

Similar events have already caused serious injuries, most notably in January 2025, when a car hit students blocking an intersection in central Belgrade.

In the same month, a car hit students participating in a protest march in a suburb of Belgrade, seriously injuring a female student who was lifted onto the hood and then thrown to the ground.

The Serbian president, Aleksandar Vucic, then pardoned the woman accused of attempted murder in this affair, thus preventing a trial.

The protest movement in which the students took over the foreground became for the opponents of President Vucic the emblem of the fight against corruption which, according to them, is gangrenous, numerous public works started throughout the country.
