On the morning of May 12, in Irpen, Kyiv region, the driver of a Mercedes-Benz Atego truck ran over an eight-year-old girl who was crossing the road at a pedestrian crossing. The child was hospitalized, but a few hours later the girl died in the hospital. The Kyiv region police reported this on their Facebook page.
According to police, the accident occurred at the intersection of Tsentralnaya and Dontsova streets, when the truck was turning right. After the accident, the girl was hospitalized with serious injuries, and doctors fought for her life for several hours.
The 51-year-old driver was detained, and law enforcement officers began a pre-trial investigation under Part 2 of Art. 286 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (violation of road safety rules resulting in the death of the victim or causing serious bodily injury). The sanction of the article provides for up to eight years in prison.
