“I've been hunted since the day I joined the federation”

The technical director of the FRH, Viorel Mazilu, believes that by the appearance in the online environment of a few pictures from a party of the youth team, a false scandal was created, orchestrated by people from the federation who want the former international dismissed.
Viorel Mazilu explained for GSP readers what happened in the club where several players from the youth team danced after the “Carpathian Trophy” tournament in Târgu Mureș.
Viorel Mazilu offered a point of view: “An amalgam of opinions, both positive and negative, was created”
Through the point of view offered by Viorel Mazilu, he also responds to several accusations brought to him through the FRH communique.
“Considering the multitude of messages and requests that I have received, regarding issuing a point of view regarding the degenerate situation as a result of the appearance in the online environment of two photos, I am practically obliged to offer a correlative position to the misleading made by people who hunt me from the moment I entered the door of the Romanian Handball Federation.
I learned during Thursday that, in the online environment, an amalgam of opinions, both positive and negative, has been created, regarding the fact that, after the last match of the Carpathian Trophy, the federation officials were invited by the legal representatives of the city to a local, on which occasion, given the limited social opportunities, some sportswomen of the team were in that location.
The members of the U20 youth team, in their free time, were photographed, but without being captured in compromising or indecent positions. The mere fact that a girl smoked an electronic cigarette is incapable of attracting the public opprobrium worthy of a true “crime tried under emergency regime” by the “International Criminal Court at The Hague”.
The athletes were not caught wearing the training equipment “during the training action!”.
The minutes of the Steering Committee established the period 07 – 11.04.2026 as the period dedicated to the Carpathian Trophy, for reasons as logical as possible, which also refer to administrative aspects. We couldn't ask the athletes to show up for the last match with their bags packed, telling them to go home after the final whistle, that is after 10:00 p.m.
Also, we have not identified what would be the “preparation action” of the sportswomen whose simple visit to a restaurant, after the completion of the tournament, would have completely paralyzed her, generating irreversible repercussions on the future of women's handball in Romania.
At the center of these actions, which in reality aim at my removal from the federation, happened to be Teodora Damian, a sportswoman who, at her age, also plays in the League of Flowers, being curious how a simple electronic cigarette destroys, without the right of appeal, the benefits she has both in the club team and in the national team.
With a simple internet search, you can see the sportswoman's contribution within both teams, including how many times she was named MVP of the matches or how her performances are associated with the word «spectacle».
Absolutely all the components of the U20 team responded positively to the training stage, i.e. they presented themselves in parameters of 20-25%, and on the last day of the training period they reached between 70 and 79%“, Viorel Mazilu declared for GSP.
Viorel Mazilu considers himself “hunted”!
Viorel Mazilu believes that both he and the components of the national youth team have not in any way violated the FRH regulations and statutes. He believes that some people in handball, who want to get rich through dishonest work from athletes, have started a war against him.
“Considering the fact that, from the two photographs, even for the most untrained mind in the world, an action in conflict with the regulations or the statute of the federation cannot clearly result, what is happening these days is, in fact, an attack on my person, without any connection with a possible “slippage” in disagreement with the direction in which the Romanian Handball Federation wants to go.
In reality, the main problem is the person of the undersigned, because I represented, represent and will represent all my life an indestructible barrier against the interests of people who want to enrich themselves, more or less legally, at the expense of athletes and handball. The story is not a new one, only the circles of influence are changing,” added Viorel Mazilu.
Considering himself denigrated by some people and wronged by the statement of the Romanian Handball Federation, which suggests that he is guilty of what happened in Târgu Mureș before the case was investigated, Viorel Mazilu reminds his detractors that they have forgotten who they are talking about.
“I have a career in handball for over 35 years, being a professional player, mostly team captain, club manager, general manager, club president, general secretary and current technical director of the Romanian Handball Federation.
I am the same person who won countless titles of national champion and Cups of Romania, important player in the national team, decorated by the President of Romania with the Sports Order, laureate of Romanian sport by decree, Master Emeritus of Sport, constantly proceeding to innovate the handball phenomenon in the world.”
The plan of technical director Viorel Mazilu
Viorel Mazilu unveiled for the first time to GSP the plan devised for the youth team in view of the 2026 U20 Women's Handball World Youth Championship. Mazilu did this for the readers of GSP, because he was often accused of just “walking abroad with the national teams” in his position.
The plan is called “Gold Standard” and has 12 points, including: Jinzhong City's environmental profile, jet lag management, thermal and moderate altitude acclimatization, hydration and nutritional strategy, and nutritional baggage.
“Let's talk about the present and, above all, how the federation officials want, about the future. More specifically, what Viorel Mazilu does, as the technical director, during the time when he does not have “slips” regarding the U20 women's national team.
Thus, I invite you to go through the strategy created for the 2026 U20 Youth Women's World Handball Championship, which will take place from June 24 to July 5, 2026, in Jinzhong, China.
Because Viorel Mazilu always played only in the team, I want to thank COSR, especially the Olympic Testing and Scientific Assistance Center (COTAS), ANS, the entire technical staff who helped me in the creation and implementation of all actions, both public and non-public, but all being at least on an equal footing with those of the international forces in the phenomenon: Alexandrescu Nicoleta, Oprescu Alin, Valeriu Tomescu, Dr. Ciocoiu Florin, Andreea Tetean, including the entire medical staff who made sure that the athletes were fit every day, and the entire technical staff of the federation,” Mazilu said.
Viorel Mazilu believes that the most important thing for handball is that the people who work in the field each do something tangible for this sport.
“Personally, I unconditionally helped any person from the phenomenon who asked for my help. I have something to leave behind, but you, all the others, who went hunting for Viorel Mazilu's head, under the pretext of defending the good of Romanian handball, what are you leaving behind?”
